Launched on April 6, 2018, the Canadian Centre on Transportation Data (CCTD) is a new web portal created by Transport Canada and Statistics Canada. The Centre provides Canadians with access to numerous sources of data and information on Canada's transportation system, including performance indicators.
The Canadian Transportation Research Forum (CTRF), a non-profit association of transportation professionals, held its 53rd Annual Conference in Gatineau, Quebec, from June 3 to 6, 2018. The conference’s theme—the Future of Canada’s Transportation System—examined Canada’s future transportation challenges and the country’s ability to address these challenges and maintain a reliable and competitive transportation system. The 2018 CTRF conference consisted of three plenary sessions, concurrent paper sessions, two keynote speakers and technical tours.
Transport Canada's "Transportation in Canada 2017 Overview Report" highlights the role of transportation in the economy, covering air, marine, rail, and road infrastructure. It also discusses the Transportation Modernization Act, which establishes new air passenger rights and aims to improve rail safety and investment.
Transport Canada’s five supply-chain visibility projects were launched in 2017 with the objective of improving the efficiency and connectivity of the national multimodal transportation network. One of these projects is the Greater Toronto Area e-commerce supply-chain visibility project. This project aims to increase the visibility of e-commerce supply chains to identify strategic infrastructure and data needs, as well as policy questions affecting the three levels of government.
Canada’s transportation system supports Canada’s global trade, evaluated at $1.1 trillion in 2017. Of that amount, 63.4% originated in or was destined for the United States, our main trading partner. The United States was the destination for 75.9% of Canadian exports and the origin of 51.3% of imports into the Canadian marketplace (tables 1 and 2).
Transport Canada is modernizing its legislative and oversight frameworks to address the complexities of a digital economy. This includes updating core safety and security acts to better manage risks and support innovation, as well as improving its capability to analyze transportation data to enhance public safety.
In October 2018, The International Air Cargo Association hosted the biennial Air Cargo Forum in Toronto. This forum brought together over 500 experts in the field of air cargo from all over the world, representing shippers, freight forwarders, air carriers, regulators, suppliers and academia.
