Transport Canada's (TC) safety and security programs provide a broad range of activities including:
- regulatory authorizations, by issuing certificates and licenses to people, organizations or for equipment
- compliance inspections and audits
- enforcement action in cases of non-compliance; and
- education and outreach activities for key stakeholders and the general public
TC monitors these oversight activities on a quarterly basis across all programs and regions. Starting with the 2017-2018 fiscal year, the department is publishing data on regulatory authorizations, planned risk-based and reactive oversight activities— like technical inspections and audits—as well as quality assurance and control activities. Other oversight activities will be added in the future.
Transparency at Transport Canada
The goal of Transport Canada's Oversight Transparency Initiative is to give Canadians easy access to the latest information on its safety and security programs. Sharing this information builds the public's trust and engages Canadians, while helping them make decisions that support a safe and secure transportation system.
What's changing?
We're changing how we work and manage information to:
- make information easy for all Canadians to find, read and use
- change how we create, publish and store information
What's new in this release?
Last month, we released a table on enforcement actions (Table 23-10-0001) and on immediate risk reductions measures (Table 23-10-0073). These tables start with the April to June quarter of the 2019-2020 fiscal year.
With this information, Canadians can now access a program-by-program overview of TC's enforcement actions and immediate risk reduction measures. TC officers take these actions to respond when regulated parties don't follow requirements or when there's an immediate threat to safety or security. This activity is part of our oversight goal of supporting a safe and secure transportation system.
Over the next 2 years, we will be publishing more of TC's oversight information.
