An efficient and modern transportation system has always been key to supporting a strong and competitive economy, and improving Canadians' quality of life. Therefore, the Government of Canada announced an investment of $50 million over 11 years to build the Canadian Centre on Transportation Data (CCTD). As part of this initiative, Transport Canada and Statistics Canada will collect and share new data, performance indicators, analysis and research on transportation in Canada.
The CCTD is an ambitious project. It will:
- build new partnerships with the transportation industry, transportation users, researchers and other levels of government
- make available better data, analysis and information about the national transportation system
- develop new tools and applications to promote the flow of transportation-related information and knowledge and enhance understanding and decision-making.
The new Transportation Data and Information Hub (the Hub) was developed as part of the CCTD to make data and information more accessible and to increase understanding of the transportation sector and its role in Canada's economy and society. The Hub also provides new performance measures for certain components of the national transportation system.
Information about new developments will be announced each month on this site in "What's new this month."
Mandate
As announced in the federal Budget 2017, the CCTD and its Hub will serve as authoritative sources of information on multi-modal transportation and performance measures. The initiative will support innovations, including transparency, research and collaboration, that will move goods from the manufacturer and into the hands of consumers more quickly and cleanly at affordable costs.
Mission
The CCTD's mission is to serve Canada and Canadians through stronger partnerships with key stakeholders, and by improving access to authoritative data to support policy and decision makers, industry players and transportation users as they address issues that are critical to making the transportation sector safer, cleaner and more efficient.
Vision
The CCTD brings together key researchers, transportation users, policy makers and industry leaders in Canada to provide leadership for improving Canada's transportation system.
As such, the CCTD will also support the Vision expressed in Transportation 2030 of a safe, secure, green, innovative and integrated transportation system that supports trade and economic growth, a cleaner environment and the well-being of Canada's middle class.
