Transport Canada has released its 2020 annual report

The report Transportation in Canada 2020 gives an overview of the Canadian transportation sector and includes information on

• the importance of the transportation sector to the economy
• the performance of the transportation system from a multimodal perspective
• major industry and regulatory developments related to freight, passengers, safety, security and the environment for all modes of transportation

The 2020 report also informs Canadians about the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the transportation demand, challenges faced by the transportation system and different measures taken by the Government of Canada to help alleviate those challenges.

Key report highlights

• In 2020, the transportation and warehousing sector’s gross domestic product declined much more (-20.4%) than all other industries in Canada (-5.2%) due to a significant reduction in passenger services during the pandemic.
• Since the onset of the pandemic, the Government of Canada put in place a number of financial support measures including assistance to Canadian air carriers, airports, and the aerospace sector to protect Canadians and the public interest.
• This past year, Transport Canada initiated funding for seven new projects under the National Trade Corridors Fund, to equal a total of 89 projects with $1.9 billion in federal investment and leveraging total investments of $3.9 billion.
• Safer vehicles and road infrastructure have all contributed to greater safety levels and reduced casualties as the motor vehicle transportation sector continues to undergo major transformation.
• Advances in information, communication, and other technologies and innovations are being applied to transportation infrastructure, equipment, and supply chain management in an effort to make them smarter and more efficient. Technological changes, such as ride sharing and “last-mile” delivery services have altered both how and where transportation occurs and will continue to disrupt transportation in the future.
