Notes and Sources
Note: Mt CO2e = Megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. Totals may not add up due to rounding.
Description:
This table presents annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by economic sector in Canada from 2005 to 2023, measured in megatonnes of CO₂ equivalent. While national emissions declined from 759 Mt in 2005 to 694 Mt in 2023—largely due to reductions in the electricity and heavy industry sectors—emissions from the transportation sector remained relatively stable over the period, peaking in 2019 before dropping significantly in 2020 due to COVID-19 and partially rebounding in recent years.
Methodology:
The data were taken directly from the original data source. "Others" include Coal Production, Light Manufacturing, Construction and Forest Resources.
